What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient system of medicine that has been used successfully for thousands of years to stimulate the body’s own ability to heal. It is based on the theory that energy, or qi (pronounced “chee”), flows through our bodies in various pathways. When the qi flows smoothly, we enjoy good health and vitality. When there is a disruption in the flow, we experience pain and illness.
Acupuncture is extremely safe and gentle. We place very fine, sterile, single-use needles at specific points along the body that are chosen to promote the smooth flow of qi and stimulate the body’s healing response. Most people find the treatments to be very relaxing and painless. Acupuncture is gentle enough to be used successfully for treating children. In some cases, we will utilize acupressure, or massaging of the acupuncture points, if a patient prefers that option instead of traditional acupuncture.
